Stephen Winslow Nutter passed away on August 16, in Marblehead. He was the son of John and Bunny Nutter, also of Topsfield.
Steve was an equestrian in his youth and was involved in farm activities at Red Pine Farm in Topsfield. In the early 1970’s, he met Roland Cognac when they each worked for Desmond Construction. Their roles included steeplejack painting of church spires, and a wide variety of commercial and religious facility work. Steve and Rollie formed Nutter – Cognac Construction in the 1970’s. Starting with small residential and commercial projects, they evolved to be one of the Northshore’s premier residential general contractors. Steve was known to be a perfectionist. He focused on accepting only the highest quality of workmanship from all the tradespeople who collaborated with Steve and Rollie. He was not only a master craftsman, but he was also an adept Bobcat operator. During a residential construction project in 1994 on Marblehead Neck, Steve caught the fishing habit. From those days forward his passion grew from small power boats to his twin engine, ocean fishing power boat. Many of the allied trades enjoyed fishing trips to several favorite ocean locations out of the Essex River.
When not on a construction site or on his boat, he was behind the wheel of a Ford F350 work body truck plowing snow for the Town of Topsfield. After work he was typically a patron of the Choate Bridge Pub in Ipswich, holding forth on matters of carpentry and fishing. Later in life, he also was a regular barstool sitter at the Agawam Diner for breakfast.
His brother, Ben, and sister, Stina, wish to thank Krista Rajunas for her faithful role as Steve’s health care proxy. Her concern for his health was exceptional, and she was uniquely capable of guiding his health care.
Steve is survived by his two sons, Joshua and Jaime Nutter. He is also survived by his brother, Ben Nutter, and sister Stina, as well as her husband, Jim MacDougall, all of Topsfield.
