Robert N. "Rob" Smith

With the deepest sorrow, we announce the passing of Robert N. Smith on August 13, 2026. Although he was taken from us far too soon, Rob fought a courageous and fierce battle against cancer.

Rob grew up in the Tri-Town area and graduated from Masconomet Regional High School before continuing his education at North Shore Community College and graduated from Salem State University. He went on to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer, proudly serving with the Topsfield, Essex, Wenham, Middleton, and Boxford Police Departments.

Rob was a man who consistently put others before himself. He was a dedicated professional who took immense pride in his life's work as a police officer, and he counted many of his colleagues among his dearest friends. He leaves behind a lasting mark on the coworkers he served alongside and the countless people he helped throughout his career.

Above all else, Rob was a devoted husband and a proud father. That was who he was, and everything else came second. He was confirmed in the Catholic Church so that he could marry his soulmate, Judy, and that faith remained an important part of his life. Together, Rob and Judy were blessed with two children, Jeffrey and Michael, whom he loved with all his heart. Being their dad was his greatest joy and proudest title. 

Rob known as Smitty to many, could usually be found around trucks and tractors, old or new, always appreciating a good restoration or the latest model. He had many hobbies and enjoyed skiing, talking with his friends every day, blasting country music, grabbing a coffee, playing with his dogs, and fixing just about anything. He had a gift for figuring things out and was always willing to lend a hand.

Nothing made him happier than spending time with the people he cared about. Rob never had a bad day, only days that were harder than others. He brought positivity, kindness, and laughter wherever he went and left an impact far greater than most will ever realize. His time with us was far too short, but the love he gave and the memories he created will remain with those who knew him.

Rob is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his cherished children, Jeffrey and Michael; his parents, Robert and Amanda Smith; his brother, Andrew Smith; his sister, Jennifer LaBonte; his nieces and nephews; his in-laws, Sheree O’Reilly and Larry DeLorenzo; his brother in-laws Alan and Late Jeffrey DeLorenzo; his best friend, Mike Balsley and many aunts, uncles, coworkers, and close friends whom he considered family. All of them will deeply mourn the profound loss of a man who brought so much love, honor, strength, and kindness into their lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a scholarship in Rob’s name for graduating high school students with a passion for law enforcement. Through this scholarship, his legacy of service and dedication to others will continue to live on.
