Ralph E. Ardiff Jr.
Ralph E. Ardiff Jr. of Danvers, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home on September 16th at the age of 85 surrounded by his family, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, friendship, service, adventure, and generosity.
Ralph was the beloved husband of 64 years to Martha Burns Ardiff, with whom he shared a wonderful life filled with family, friendships, travel, and countless adventures. He was the loving father of Elizabeth Ardiff Daly and her husband, Paul, of Danvers, and the late Rebecca Ardiff Jensen of Danvers.
He was the cherished grandfather of Trevor Daly and his wife, Meagan, Zachary Daly, Ava Daly, and Heather Jensen, who brought him immense pride and joy. He was a regular at their baseball games, soccer games, dance recitals, hockey games and cross country meets and enjoyed countless ski and lake vacations, mountain hiking, golf outings and so much more with his grandchildren.
Ralph was a highly respected real estate attorney, first practicing with Ardiff, Ardiff & Morse and later with Ardiff & Blake. He was known not only for his professionalism and dedication to his clients, but also for the lasting relationships he built throughout his long and distinguished career.
Beyond his work, Ralph was a proud lifelong Rotarian and a devoted member of the Danvers community. He served as President of both the Danvers Rotary Club and the Danvers Community YMCA Board of Directors. Over the years, he led countless fundraising campaigns for local projects, including numerous Rotary initiatives, the expansion of the Danvers YMCA, the Salem Village Witchcraft Victims' Memorial on Hobart Street, and the Rotary Pavilion on Mill Pond in Danvers among many others.
Ralph was also a generous philanthropist, giving his time, energy, and resources to causes and organizations that mattered deeply to him. Alongside his good friend and cycling buddy, Donny Gates, Ralph participated in 17 Pan-Mass Challenge bicycle rides as “Heavy Hitters” - raising more than $300,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
In the summer of 1988, Ralph and his friend Bob Tarlin, with Don Ingraham accompanying them in a provisions van, spent nine weeks riding their bicycles across the United States—from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Their journey ended at the Danversport Yacht Club and was undertaken to raise money and awareness for PolioPlus.
Sports, travel and adventure were central to Ralph's life. As a lacrosse player at Amherst College he earned the honor of being selected for the All American Intercollegiate Lacrosse Team. During his adulthood he traveled extensively across many continents, often exploring the countryside by bicycle. His adventures included white-water rafting the Colorado River, going on an African safari, and studying humpback whales aboard the Regina Maris. He earned his private pilot's license and delighted in taking friends and family on private tours of the area from the air. In his later years he enjoyed daily walks on the Rail Trail with his granddog, Beck.
Ralph embraced life with an uncommon sense of curiosity, enthusiasm, and fun. Whether on a bicycle, in an airplane, traveling across the world, pursuing a cause close to his heart, or simply spending time with family and friends, he had a remarkable ability to turn nearly any event or task into an adventure. His quick wit and wonderful sense of humor brought laughter and joy to those around him.
Ralph was so many things to so many people: a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, trusted attorney, loyal friend, community leader, Rotarian, traveler, sportsman, adventurer, and philanthropist. Above all, he was someone who treasured relationships and made the people around him feel valued and included.
He leaves behind many dear lifelong friends who will remember his warmth, generosity, humor, adventurous spirit, and zest for life.
Ralph's greatest legacy will be the love he gave to his family, the friendships he treasured, the community he served, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable 85 years. His memory will live on in the stories, adventures, laughter, and love shared by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Ralph will be laid to rest in a private burial at Walnut Grove cemetery in Danvers. The family will host of Celebration of Life for him at Danversport Yacht Club on Thursday, October 22 from 6 – 10pm. And of course, green attire is strongly encouraged.
