Patricia FitzGerald Obituary

Patricia M. (Flynn) FitzGerald, 89, of Middleton MA, passed away on February 24, 2023. She is survived by her loving son Barry and his wife Patty, of Danvers MA; son John and his wife Karen, of Middleton MA; daughter Maura and her husband Bill, of Swampscott MA; grandchildren Julie, Sarah and husband Mike, Caitlyn, Ashley, Dylan, Andrew, and Calum; great-grandchildren Emily and Robert; sisters Maureen and Geraldine; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Francis, and grandson Jake.

Pat was born in Somerville, MA in September 1933 to Helen and Francis Flynn. At a very young age, she taught herself to read. As she grew up, she knew she wanted to be a teacher to pass along the gift of literacy. After graduating from Matignon High School, she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Salem Teachers College and her master’s degree from Salem State College. Pat taught in a number of school districts in the Boston area but spent most of her career with the Danvers Public Schools. Even after her retirement, she kept her Great Oak School commemorative plaque prominently displayed and decades of ornaments from her students on her Christmas tree.

It was at Salem Teachers College where Pat met Frank, the love of her life. Starting with their honeymoon in 1956 - a road trip from Cambridge to Mexico - they shared a lifelong love of travel. Early trips consisted of not much more than a car and an old army tent, but they kept exploring. They traveled every chance they had and were fortunate to see all 50 states and many foreign countries. Pat especially enjoyed making new friends, trying different cuisines, and visiting historical sites.

More than anything, Pat loved her family. She hosted holiday gatherings, proofread school essays, and, when asked, offered sage advice. Pat will be remembered for the love she shared, the home she created for her family, the many friends she cherished, and the hundreds of children she taught over the years.
