Michael Kelleher Obituary

Michael W. Kelleher, a man of boundless kindness, mischievous humor, and unwavering devotion to those he loved, passed away on February 5, 2025 at the age of 70. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and a heart that always had room for one more.

Born in Beverly, MA on August 30th, 1954, beloved son of the late Martin & Irene (Oliver) Kelleher, Michael lived a life defined by both duty and playfulness. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1972 to 1986, protecting the nation's waters with diligence and pride. After his time in the service, he continued to dedicate himself to others as a correctional officer and later as a caseworker for the Department of Mental Health, where he provided guidance and care to those in need.

Beyond his career, Michael was a man of many passions. In his younger years, he found joy in bowling, karate, rowing, and a good game of cribbage— always eager to embrace the thrill of competition. In his later years, Michael enjoyed the more classic games, a testament to the kid at heart he never outgrew. Whether it was the strategy of Magic: The Gathering, the adventure of Dungeons & Dragons, or the nostalgia of retro Nintendo games, he found joy in playing, but even more joy in sharing the love of these games with his many kids.

As a father, Michael was deeply involved, coaching his children in baseball and flag football and even teaching them karate, ensuring they grew up with both discipline and fun. Yet, his role as a mentor and protector extended far beyond his own family. His home was always open—whether to friends, relatives, or anyone who needed a safe place to land. He took in wayward souls and nourished them, offering guidance, laughter, and unconditional acceptance.

Michael will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, and the way he made light of even the darkest of times. As those who knew him can attest, he “always had a kind word, a warm hug, and a strong spirit.”

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 34 years, Sheri (Perrino) Kelleher; two sisters, and their spouses: Cathy (Kelleher) and James Little, Linda (Kelleher) Eckert; seven children and their spouses: Bridgette and Earl Kelleher, Shaun Kelleher and Wen Ching Choi, Candice (Kelleher) and Wayne Houghtling, Kelly (Kelleher) and James Kadra, Kaitlin Kelleher, Michael and Emily (Jeffers) Kelleher, and Aiden Kelleher;  four grandchildren: Damon Tenney, Serenna and Elias Kadra, and Christopher Houghtling; he is also survived by a plethora of (great) nieces, (great) nephews, cousins, as well as an extended family of friends and loved ones who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He was sadly predeceased by his younger sister: Donna Kelleher.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held with visitation on February 14th, 2025 at Mackey Funeral Home, from 11am-1pm followed by a service, at 1pm where stories will be shared, laughter will be had, and his enduring spirit will be honored. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude in keeping with his lifelong commitment to helping others. see the links below:

Though he has left this world, his light remains—flickering in the memories of those who knew him, in the laughter of a well-played game, and in the kindness we choose to pass on.
