Maureen F. (Leavitt) Shelgren 77, of Bedford, NH and formerly of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, passed away March 30, 2020 after an extended fight with Alzheimer's.
Maureen was born September 12, 1942 in Lexington Mass, daughter of the late Arthur and Frances Leavitt. In 1961, Maureen married Robert Shelgren and soon thereafter had two sons, Steven Shelgren of Boxford, MA and Michael of Westford, MA. In addition to her sister and sons, Maureen is survived by five grandchildren including Mackenzie who brought her nothing but joy, Taylor who always made her smile, Tristan whom she could never catch, Mikayla who warmed her heart, and Ava who was the baby of her family.
Maureen also leaves her younger sister Anne Leavitt who currently resides in Falmouth Mass. As Maureen’s illness progressed, she and Anne switched roles and Anne became the big sister, loyal caretaker and constant guardian of her sister’s well-being. There was never a better sister than Anne was to Maureen.
One of Maureen’s gifts was her ability to bring people together. When she laughed at a party, you couldn’t help but laugh with her. She remained lifelong friends with many of the people she grew up within Lexington, including Joanne, Roberta, Stelle, Ellen and Mary. Maureen enjoyed golfing, gardening, and vacations on Cape Cod.
Maureen will be remembered for her love of animals. She had two horses, Joey who was a beautiful thoroughbred she saved one fateful day and Minuteman, a Morgan she adored. She also had many Irish Setters that she took everywhere in order to socialize them before it was popular. These included Baron, then Finnegan, and finally Shamrock. These dogs were among the loves of her life. She also had two Persian cats and twelve small ducks (thanks to my father who couldn’t resist giving her everything to make her happy).
If you met Maureen, you would never forget her. She had a wicked sense of humor that faded over the years like the flowers in her garden. In the end, Maureen is finally at peace with the world. Hopefully, she brightened one of your days the way she brightened her family’s lives.
Services will be held at a later date for safety due to the current pandemic.
