Colonel Leonard "Lenny" F. Nolan, Jr. (retired) passed away on Tuesday, Aug 16th at Liana Living Memory Care in Venice, FL after a long battle with Dementia. Lenny is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dorothy (Flynn) Nolan, his son Michael Nolan, his daughter Leigh Wolnik and his grandchildren, Lauren, Erin and Luke Wolnik and Brooke Nolan. He was the son of the late Leonard F. & Ellen (McDewell) Nolan Sr.
Lenny was a retired Colonel from the New Hampshire Air National Guard where he was the 157th USAF Clinic Commander. In 1978, the same year he assumed command of the clinic, Lenny was named Air National Guard Advisor to the Air Surgeon at the National Guard Bureau. As a Dentist, Lenny was the first non-physician commander of a clinic in New Hampshire. Under Lenny's leadership, the 157th won five consecutive Health Service Inspection "Excellent" ratings and lead the unit to receive the Schafer Award as Outstanding Air Guard and Reserve Clinic in 1981 and 1989. In 1980, the Deputy Air Surgeon of the ANG selected him as "Outstanding Medical Service Corps Officer" in part due to his coordination of clinical support to New England police units during the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station demonstrations. In 1985, Lenny was promoted to full Colonel, which was a first in the history of the Air National Guard as Dentists were previously limited to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In addition to his successful military career, Lenny also had his Dental practice in South Hamilton, MA, was Director of Dental Service at Dept. of Public Health in Beverly, MA; Asst Professor Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine; Staff Instructor at Forsyth Center Research Dept. and President of the Academy of Air National Guard Dentists.
Lenny enjoyed fishing and photography. He loved his family and was always someone who would bend over backward to help a friend.
Celebration of Life visiting hours on Friday, August 26th from 10am-11:30am at Mackey Funeral Home, 128 S. Main St., Rt 114, Middleton. Burial will follow with military honors at Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers.
