Obituary

Kenneth B. Canning, Jr., 63, passed away peacefully at his home in North Andover, MA on Friday September 9, 2022 after several years of battling Melanoma.

Ken was an award-winning photographer with a deep passion for nature photography. He traveled the globe to locations such as Tanzania, the Grand Teton National Park, and Svalbard (near the arctic circle), capturing the beauty of our land and its creatures. His works have appeared in many notable publications including National Geographic, Nature Magazine, and The New England Journal of Medicine. However, he was most proud of the photo that was used on an episode of Sesame Street!

Since 2004, Ken worked at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, eventually achieving the position of Vice President of Oncology & Biologics Quality.

Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and son-in-law. He was married for 36 years to the love of his life, Donna (Lareau) Canning. They met working together and had their first date after Donna won all his money at a poker game in the break room. They enjoyed life together to the fullest from the big things, like trips to Hawaii, to the small things, like a game of mini golf and a Richardson’s ice cream. They could often be found together at a furniture store, rug store, or paint shop picking out the newest color scheme for the dream home that they built together.

Ken was a loving father to his three children, and he had a special bond with each one. He spent many a weekend fishing with his son, Keith Canning, and he stood proudly as Keith married his beautiful bride, Rachel (Falk) Canning. He was thrilled to share his passion for photography with his son, Scott Canning, taking him on trips around the world to photograph animals and landscapes. With his daughter, Michelle Canning, he shared an excitement for music, playing together and listening to sneak-peak previews of her latest songs.

In 2016, Ken was promoted from Dad to Grandpa. He loved to play Legos and games with his grandson, Ray Canning. He was excited to welcome another handsome grandson, Jace Canning, into the world in April of 2022.

Ken also had a close relationship with his mother-in-law, Helen “Dolly” Lareau. They enjoyed playing card games and making jokes about him throwing her in “the tar pits.”

Ken is preceded in death by his loving parents, Kenneth B. Canning, Sr. and Loretta (Favareau) Canning, and his father-in-law and dear friend, Norman Lareau.
