Joseph (Joe) Gaetano Dimino passed away peacefully alongside his family on May 18, 2024, at the age of ninety-two.
Joe had an enterprising spirit and a perpetual love of learning, but his greatest joy was his family. He met the love of his life, Esther (Rolli) Dimino in 1957. They share two sons, Thomas, and John along with four grandchildren, Joseph and his wife, Marisa, Alexandra, John and Gia. The love and admiration he had for Esther was evident to everyone around them for over 65 years of marriage. He instilled the importance of family and serving others in his children and grandchildren, continuing traditions like “Italian Sunday dinner” with family, friends and, of course, all the dogs in attendance over the years: Smokey, Tona, Chuckles, Diesel, Zoey, Gino, and Lincoln. Despite having a busy work and family life, Joe always took time to help those in need – family, friends, and strangers. His fatherly devotion to his two daughters in law, Debra, and Victoria, as well as his unofficial third son, Phil Buchierrie, and their deep love for him is a testament to the impact he had on his family.
Resilience and competitiveness are two more characteristics that Joe embraced. He was a natural at most everything he attempted, and if not, he was a student that quickly learned. He had an insatiable love of sport as a competitor and an avid Boston sports fan. He treasured his time as a quarterback on the Everett Wildcats Football team and was tenacious playing golf and tennis with family and friends. He enjoyed watching any sporting event and traveled to countless baseball stadiums with his sons and grandsons. He often reflected on the baseball trips as the “best trips of his life.”
Joe was born in the North End of Boston, a second-generation Italian American, to Thomas and Regina (DeLeo) Dimino. He and his four siblings, Katherine, Alphonse, Thomas, and Leonora were all raised with a strong love for their country and community. At 19, he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a communications specialist. Only after his passing that his family learned that Joe received multiple honors and was the leader of his basic training class. He was never one to brag or focus on himself. Joe was honored to serve his country and this experience deepened his commitment to service and improving the lives of those around him. His bond and connection to his Air Force friends lasted a lifetime.
After returning to civilian life, he and his brother Al founded a cabinet making business and later, Dimino’s Subs. Joe’s son, John, later joined the family business and continued his father’s legacy delivering quality and value to the Beachmont community and greater Revere/East Boston area for over 50 years. Joe always found time and energy to extend kindness, empathy, and guidance to those around him. He constantly fed customers who couldn’t pay for their food, and he was a father figure to the many people who worked for him. Every employee learned the value of hard work and commitment, ensuring they left his sub shop a little better than when they came in. As a former employee put it, “He was always there to listen and guide me, never judge, and never tolerate when I was not doing my best, at work, school or in life. His employees were family and it really helped shape who I am today.”
Joe’s proudest role in life was being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Playing sports with his grandchildren before and after school, attending their events, teaching them about history, politics and so many life lessons were the highlights of his life; and theirs. If you ask his grandchildren, papa’s greatest contribution was his active involvement and authentic never- ending investment in their lives. He was a true patriarch and the rock of his family.
Joe never enjoyed the spotlight, and he asked his family to celebrate his life privately. His final wish, was again a selfless one, requesting that individuals donate to one of his favorite charities in his name, the St. Jude’s Children'S Research Hospital : SEE THE LINK BELOW
