John McGrath Obituary

John Francis McGrath, a cherished patriarch, and respected community member, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at his home in Danvers, Massachusetts. Born on January 22, 1933, in Boston, MA, John's life was characterized by his quintessential dedication to his family, his passion for education, and his love for sports.

John leaves behind a legacy of love and a family that revered him. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elaine Wall McGrath, and his son, John Ellsworth McGrath. His memory will be treasured by his daughters, JoAnn McGrath Craze and her husband, James Darryl, of Miller Grove, Texas; Nancy McGrath Adams and her husband, Michael, of Parrish, Florida; and Retired Air Force Colonel Caroline McGrath of Niceville, Florida. His sons, Neil Scott McGrath and his wife, Kim, of Groton Long Point, Connecticut; and Charles Edmund and his wife, Susan, of Danvers, Massachusetts, will carry on his legacy.  John's grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him as a source of wisdom and joy. He was the proud grandfather of John "Alex" Craze, Dale Forget, Dana and Keira McGrath, Anthony Castellano, Amy Elena Santos, Clayton, Sam and Hannah McGrath, Ethan and Shaelyn McGrath, Carleigh Cutbush, and Caleb Samuolis. His great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Sadie Craze, Zacarias, Camryn and Marcella Marisol Santos, Rosemary, Elaine and Ben McGrath, and Holland McGrath, will miss his stories and guidance. John also found joy in his bonus grandchildren, Owen, Leo, and Sean Driscoll; Logan, Hunter, Colton and Nolan Adams. Also leaving a daughter-in-law Lori Canarie-McGrath of Machester NH. His life was further enriched by the unwavering companionship of Denise Brown, a loyal friend for over 25 years.

John's academic pursuits led him to earn a Master of Arts in Education from Tufts University. His professional life was marked by a long and esteemed career as a teacher, during which he also made his mark as a coach for basketball and baseball. He led teams to victory, including a Massachusetts State Baseball Championship, and served with distinction as president of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).  A man of faith, John lived his Christian beliefs through actions that spoke of kindness, integrity, and generosity.

His interests were diverse, but he found particular pleasure in his mastery of the stock market where his wisdom was demonstrated by those who followed his frequent hot tips.  As a man who believed in the power of words and deeds, John often reflected on the adage, "To teach is to touch a life forever." This quote, though its author remains unknown and encapsulates the impact John had on countless students and athletes throughout his life, not only through his teaching and coaching but also through the example he set as a father, grandfather, and friend. John Francis McGrath's wisdom, love, and laughter will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His was a life well-lived, full of accomplishment, service, and, most importantly, love.

His story will be told and retold by those who loved him, ensuring that his memory continues to inspire and guide future generations.
