John Joseph "Jack" Irwin, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2023, in Danvers, Massachusetts. Born on January 19, 1940, in Boston, Massachusetts to Thomas J. and Lillian M. Irwin, Jack lived a life full of profound experiences, meaningful relationships, and countless achievements. His generosity and dependability will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him.
Jack's early years were grounded in the historic city of East Boston, where he attended Sacred Heart School and later graduated from Boston Latin School, Class of 1957. His academic journey shaped his intellectual prowess, a trait that served him well in his personal and professional life. With a spirit that combined determination and resilience, Jack served in the US Army from 1958 to 1962, a period of his life that he always held in high esteem.
In 1962, Jack embarked on a rewarding career at Elm Farm Supermarkets, starting as a produce clerk. His dedication, hard work, and keen business acumen led him to a successful 46-year tenure at Foodmaster Supermarkets Inc, where he served as Produce Director. Jack’s professional life was marked by his commitment to his work and the strong relationships he built along the way.
Jack had a fondness for sports and outdoor activities that he carried throughout his life. His love for hockey began in his school days, where he not only played for Boston Latin but also held the prestigious position of co-captain and was recognized as an all-star. He was a fervent supporter of Boston sports teams and relished the thrill of horse racing, often visiting the tracks at Saratoga and Suffolk Downs. Jack’s interests extended beyond sports; he enjoyed working in his yard and undertaking house projects, and his travels took him across the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean alongside his Foodmaster friends.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Suzan A. (Irwin) Foy and her partner Wess Cathcart, and Cheryl M. (Irwin) McIntosh and her husband Robert McIntosh; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn E. Foy, Kevin T. Foy, Meredith L. McIntosh, and Emily B. McIntosh; and his great-grandchildren, Jazzmin Nelson and Jason T. Portes. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Leona R. (Deslongchamps) Irwin. He is also survived by his brother Thomas C. Irwin and his sister-in-law Anne Marie; cousin Christine Viscay, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His family will forever cherish the memories and life lessons he imparted, and his legacy will live on through them.
Jack's life was a testament to his intelligence, generosity, and analytical nature. His resilience in the face of adversity, and his dedication to his work and family will forever be remembered. His departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Jack Irwin's life was a journey of love, hard work, and dedication. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those he left behind. May his soul rest in peace, and his legacy continue to inspire.
