Joanne Susan Goodwin, affectionately known as “Sue” to her friends and family, was a beacon of light and love to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Born on January 5, 1934, in the town of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, Sue's journey on this earth came to a peaceful close on July 20, 2025, in the comforting surroundings of Middleton. She departed from us as she lived—quietly, gracefully, and surrounded by the love of her family.
Sue's life was a testament to the virtues of gentleness, kindness, and love, which she embodied in every action and interaction. She was predeceased by her husband, John Goodwin. Together they raised a remarkable family: Warren Goodwin and Monica Depalma, Peter Goodwin and his wife Janice, Meredith Goodwin and her wife Julie Goodwin-Wright, and Stephen Goodwin and Debra Purdy. Sue was also the cherished grandmother to Mathew and Derek Goodwin, Nicholas Goodwin of Austin Texas, Jessica Goodwin of Billerica, and Michael and John Atkinson who carry forward her legacy of warmth and compassion.
A lifelong learner, Sue graduated summa cum laude from the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene at Tufts University. Her love of nature and how things worked were matched only by her commitment to her community and her passion for the arts. Sue was an accomplished artist whose works adorn many homes throughout the country. Her love for music found its expression in her joyous participation with her church choir and the North Shore Chorus.
Sue had a strong faith which she and her husband lived through their involvement with Bread & Roses and local community gardens. Later in life, she knitted prayer shawls and participated actively in prayer groups.
Her memory will continue to inspire us to live with purpose, to cherish our loved ones, and to spread kindness wherever we go.
Sue Goodwin's story does not end with her passing, for her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. Her legacy is one of kindness, and she will be greatly missed.
Funeral service and interment will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Road in Topsfield Saturday July 26 at 1pm, followed by a celebration of her life in the parish hall, which all are kindly invited.
