Obituary

James O. Scarlett, Sr. (88), affectionately known as "Jim" to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2023. Born in Lowell, MA, he was a long-time resident of Malden, MA, where he met and married his wife, Bev, of 62 years and raised a family.

In retirement, Jim and Bev moved to Cape Cod where they spent many years enjoying all the Cape had to offer... beautiful beaches, kayaking, oyster and clam fishing, to name a few of their favorite activities.

He was the beloved husband of the late Beverly T. (Grover) Scarlett and a devoted father to his four children: James Scarlett, Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Laura Cavallaro (husband Chuck) of Middleton, MA, Lisa Freker ( husband Gary) of Lowell, MA, and Donna Scarlett of Lynn, MA. His joy was multiplied by his five cherished grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley Freker of Lowell, Max, Andrew and Ava Cavallaro of Middleton.  of whom he was so proud.  Jim is also survived by his sister Patricia King of Salem, N.H., and many nieces and nephews. Jim was the son of the late Luella and Joseph Scarlett of Malden, MA. He was the Brother of the late Richard Scarlett of Springfield, MA and Michael Scarlett of Wolfeboro, N.H.

Jim was a graduate of Lowell High School, after which he served in the US National Guard.  Later, he furthered his education at Northeastern University. His professional career was marked by many years as a production manager at ITT in Lawrence, MA. Jim was known for his dedication, commitment, and hard work. He was well respected by his colleagues and his leadership was greatly appreciated by all who worked under his supervision. Beyond his professional and family life, Jim had a deep love for barbershop music. His passion for this unique art form led him to spend over 42 years as a member of several barbershop choruses and quartets, most notably the Beverly, MA Northshoremen and the Cape Cod Surftones. Those who knew Jim would agree that he was a kind soul, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood. He was a gentle man and considerate of others' feelings. His kindness was genuine and he never had a bad word to say about anyone. Jim's life was a testament to the power of love, kindness, perseverance and commitment to family, most notably marked by the truly wonderful and selfless care he provided to Bev in her final months on this earth.  Jim will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will continue to bring comfort to his loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy filled with kindness, laughter and gentleness, touching the lives of many with his warm spirit. In remembering Jim, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved.

At the request of family, services will be private; they ask that you please remember Jim with a memorial donation to the Alzheimers Association.
