James Powers, the first baby born in Danvers on January 1, 1937, to Thomas and Elizabeth (Neary) Powers, surrounded by his family passed away peacefully on May 24 after a brief illness.
He was a graduate of Lynn Trade School before he entered into the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Called to duty he served in France during the Berlin Crisis from 1961-1962.
Jim returned home to his family and he worked at the United Shoe in Beverly for many years and later on he worked for Skychef with American Airlines and then worked at EG&G until his retirement in 2000.
James also served as the Grand Knight at the Thomas E. Power Council #1505, Knights of Columbus in Danvers from 1995-1996.
He leaves his children, Terry and Dan Thornell, Karen and Leo McNichol and James and Veronica (Fullerton) Powers. His grandchildren Jennifer (Thornell) and Sean McLaughlin, Sean Thornell and Emily (Burill) Thornell, Andrew Thornell, Matthew and Katrina McNichol, Andrea McNichol and Fiancé Randy Cole, David Silva, Scott Powers and Amanda Powers. He also leaves behind his former spouse Judy (Campbell) Powers and seven great-grandchildren.
Jim also leaves a sister and brother-in-law Kathleen (Powers) and Frederick Brunberg and their two children, a sister-in-law Mary Powers and her three children. He was predeceased by his brother Thomas Powers.
He had a love for Ireland and enjoyed telling stories of the memories he had while visiting his cousins and extended family while on his travels.
Visitation on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at the Mackey Funeral Home, 128 S. Main St., Rt 114, Middleton, MA from 5-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Jim on Friday, June 3rd at 9am at St. Richard Parish, Forest Street, Danvers. ( Kindly meet at church). Burial will follow at Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers.
