Irene M. Gronberg entered unto eternal rest on May 20, 2020 at the age of 93. Irene was the daughter of Edward and Eva Colbert of Salem, MA. She was predeceased by her brother Jack and husband Marshall, and leaves three children: Stephen Gronberg, Jean Mroszczyk, and Kristin Gronberg and their spouses; three grandchildren: Lisa Mroszczyk Murphy, Joseph Mroszczyk, Keri Goris and their spouses, three great grandchildren, and a first cousin Joan Demers who was like a sister to her.
Irene was born in Salem, MA, not far from the ocean, where she lived until her marriage to Marshall. She worked at Lynn Sand and Stone as a bookkeeper before becoming a homemaker. After her marriage the couple moved to Peabody for a few years and then to Danvers for the remainder of their lives. She was a wonderful mom, a smart and frugal homemaker, a great traveling companion, and she kept her bookkeeping skills sharp by mentally adding up cash register receipts to check on the machine.
Irene and Marshall were fortunate to be able to travel extensively in their VW camper all around the USA and to Europe and Scandinavia. She helped Marshall with work at Habitat for Humanity, volunteered in the office of Care Dimensions, soup kitchens and the like. She was a communicant at St. Mary's Church in Danvers.
Irene was also very fortunate and grateful every day for her good physical health which allowed her to live at home until just recently. When asked how she was doing, her usual reply was "Well I'm up on my two feet thank God". She outlived all her longtime friends, but made new friends easily, as she was very pleasant and good natured. She was also very thankful to live near the ocean and enjoyed visiting Salem Willows.
Due to the current pandemic, a private service will be held graveside. Condolences may be left at www.mackeyfuneralhome.com
