Gloria Sawyer Obituary

Gloria Rose Sawyer

Cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Gloria Rose Sawyer passed away on November 7, 2022, at the age of 93 surrounded by her family at Brooksby Village in Peabody.  Everyone who met Gloria could not help but fall in love with her warm smile, friendly personality, exquisite baking, and delicious peach pie.

Gloria was born on October 6,1929 to Daniel Otis Rose and Mary Frances Hodgins in Portland, Maine where she lived throughout her entire childhood.  She had three older siblings: Mabel Frances, Agnes Emily and Daniel Otis Rose, Jr. who she adored throughout her life. During her senior year at Deering High School, Gloria met the love of her life Charles, who she affectionately referred to as Norton. From the moment they met, Gloria and Norton were inseparable and celebrated a remarkable 71 years of marriage while welcoming six children into their family. They enjoyed many hobbies together, including playing golf, hosting bridge tournaments with their friends, and taking cruises all over the world. They could always be seen on the dance floor moving effortlessly around the room especially when songs from the 1950s came on the radio.

Gloria made sure that family, friends, and animals were welcome at her home anytime.  Many Sunday mornings in Topsfield, Massachusetts were spent sitting around her dining room table enjoying a homemade breakfast. Trickey Pond in Naples, Maine was a place for her family to gather on the water and create memories that lasted a lifetime.  She was an animal lover and any animals brought into the home by Norton or one of the children were cared for and loved; including sheep, chickens, rabbits and dogs.  Of all the animals over the years, she held their dog Cuddles closest to her heart.  Gloria was talented at needlepoint and often created beautiful designs including many needlepoint Christmas ornaments.

Gloria is survived by her husband, Charles Norton Sawyer and their six children: Charles Sawyer, Jr and wife Patricia of Charlottesville, Virginia, Daniel Sawyer and wife Donna of Scottsville, Virginia, Cheryl Krisko and husband Richard of Beverly, Massachusetts, Dana Sawyer of Naples, Maine, Julie O’Brien and husband Kevin of Topsfield, Massachusetts, and Laurie Hunt and husband, Timothy of Essex, Massachusetts. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and her thirty-six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on November 19, 2022, at the Mackey Funeral Home, 128 South Main Street, Middleton, Massachusetts. Visiting Hours are from 1:30 P.M.-2:30 P.M. with memorial service directly following.
