Frieda Kala Cohen, affectionately known as Freddy to her loved ones, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025, in Danvers, MA, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on March 1, 1937, in Boston, MA, to the late Philip Rosenberg and Zelda Rosenberg (Sperling), Freddy's warmth and vivacity left an indelible mark on everyone she met throughout her 88 years.
A graduate of Brookline High School's class of 1955, Freddy returned to school after having four children, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Simmons College in 1983. Her quest for knowledge and her dedication to service were cornerstones of her life. Freddy's professional career was diverse and impactful; she served as a Member of the Board of Registration of Physician Assistants, Volunteer Coordinator for Boston's First Night, worked in Development for Combined Jewish Philanthropy (CJP) where she coordinated a memorable trip to Israel and Egypt, and furthered her passion for seeing the world as a travel agent. Freddy was most proud to serve as the Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee for Shattuck Partners, where she advocated tirelessly for those in need.
Freddy's interests were extensive. From earlier days at her parents’ house in Nantasket Beach to vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, she loved spending time with her family and
her dog, Sabrina. She cherished the moments at her lake house in New Hampshire, where the serenity of nature was a source of comfort and rejuvenation. An adventurous spirit, she relished the opportunity to explore new places and cultures as she and husband Joe traveled the world. Her competitive nature was exhibited in games of scrabble and tennis.
Above all, Freddy's life was a testament to love. Her marriage of over 63 years to her beloved husband, Joe, was a beautiful partnership, a source of strength for both, and an
inspiration to others. She was a loving mother, and a good friend who brought laughter and joy into the lives of those around her. To her sons, she was a source of unconditional love and support. She was a great mother who encouraged her sons to forge their own paths in life. She provided just enough freedom for her kids to take risks, get in trouble and learn from their mistakes.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lawrence Cohen, and her siblings, Sarita, Janet, and Sonny. She leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication in her family. Freddy is survived by her four devoted sons, Stephen Cohen (Martha) of East Haddam, CT, Mitchell Cohen (Betty) of Foster City, CA, Ian Cohen (Jennifer) of Beverly, MA, and Colin Cohen (Jennifer) of Annapolis, MD.
Her memory will be cherished by her eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan), Anthony, Christopher, Phillip, Brandon, Grace, Ella, and Graham, as well as her two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Eliot, who brought her immeasurable joy.
A private memorial service will be held to honor Freddy’s life, with the family's wishes to keep the service intimate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the following organizations: Shattuck Partners, Alzheimer's Association, and the American Cancer Society. ( see the web links below ).
