Eugene A. Day, known to friends and family as Gene, was a man who lived his life with much humor, gusto, and love. Born on June 27, 1944, in Beverly, MA, he embarked on his final adventure on July 2, 2025, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
The middle son of Gerald and Audrey Day, Gene grew up in Beverly, MA., alongside his brothers Gerald (Jay) and David. He graduated from Beverly High School, and also proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army. He later turned his precision and dedication to a career as a machinist at General Electric, from which he retired after many years of faithful service. Gene is predeceased by his loving parents as well as his brothers.
Gene's heart was as full as his life, and he shared it with his beloved wife of 58 years, Dorothy, and together they created a household that was never short on love and laughter in which they raised their three children: Kimberly (Peter), Eric (Jean), and Joseph (Kelly). His grandchildren—Ken (Laura), Mark (Mary Kate), Tessa, Alexandra, Connor, Emily, and Keira—were the pride and joy of his life, along with his great-grandsons, Silas and Owen.
An avid athlete and outdoorsman, Gene's enthusiasm for life was infectious. He loved busting a move at weddings, cycling, running, and singing along to classic rock tunes. His legendary 110 mile bike ride to his camp in Maine was a feat that will be talked about for generations to come.
In his later years, he was the man about town, walking for miles with his latest rescue dog in tow, proving that he didn't need to move fast—he just needed to move, and everyone who passed him would be greeted with a friendly wave, even if you didn’t know him.
Gene’s compassion goes beyond the way he treated people, and was extended to the way he treated animals as well. He loved all animals and was especially known for his love of dogs, with people even referring to him as the “dog whisperer.” Gene loved animals, but they always loved him back too because they knew that he was someone with a good heart and spirit.
Gene certainly never lost his spark. His sense of humor with a wit as sharp as a tack, was as enduring as his spirit, and he often quipped, "I said ya." —a sentiment that perfectly encapsulated his approach to life. If he wasn't at his home in Beverly, he was most likely enjoying breakfast at his favorite restaurant, or at his beloved camp in Sebago, Maine.
Gene will be fondly remembered for his free spirit, kindness, and living life to the fullest. To Gene, it was all about the journey and not the destination, and he would advise everyone to just enjoy the ride.
