Dorothy Ferreira Obituary

Dorothy Anna (Farnsworth) Ferreira, 98

April 19, 1924 – October 30, 2022

Longtime resident of Middleton, Dorothy died peacefully at home on October 30, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Ferreira to whom she was married to for 61 years. Born and raised in Danvers she was the daughter of the late Sadie and John Farnsworth.

Dorothy graduated from Holten High School in 1943 and from Wilford Beauty Academy of Boston. She worked at Lear Ice Cream stand where she met her future husband Joseph Ferreira of Peabody, MA.  During WWII she built air plane parts for the military. She also worked many years as an assembler for Hytron and for Hotwatt, later promoted to the purchasing department.

She was a hard working woman who enjoyed spending time with her family. She and her husband built a summer cottage on the lake in Milton, NH. The family, relatives and friends gathered there on weekends and vacations to go swimming, boating and skiing.  In the winter they went snowmobiling throughout New Hampshire.

Once retired, she volunteered countless hours knitting for the Red Cross. Friends and family benefited from the many baby blankets, bonnets, booties and afghans she made and gifted.  Dorothy was the past chaplain and president of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She was presented with a lifetime membership for her time and commitment given over 50+ years.  She was the secretary of the Danvers and Beverly Chapters of the AARP and a longtime member of the Middleton Congregational Church.  She was awarded several pins from the American Red Cross for her blood donations.  She was also a volunteer medical driver for the Middleton Council on Aging, taking seniors to their doctor’s appointments. She was an active participant at the Middleton Senior Center and enjoyed all her trips around New England with her fellow seniors.

The most important part of her life was her family.  She is survived by her daughters Diana of Kittery, ME; Patricia Dube, and her husband James of Lebanon, ME and their children James, and Danielle and her fiancé Zachary Warner.  Her sons, Leonard and his wife Elizabeth their children Jeffrey and Sadie of Middleton, MA as well as her granddaughter Nicole and her children (Dorothy’s great grandchildren) Christian and Timothy of Peabody, MA.  Also her son Joseph and his wife Nancy Carlson of Silver Lake, NH; and her last sibling Arthur Farnsworth of Greenland, NH. She is predeceased by her parents and her brothers Douglas, Cecil, John, Raymond, Richard and her sister Frances (McLaughlin).

Arrangements will be held at Mackey Funeral Home, 128 South Main Street, Middleton, MA on Saturday, November 5, 2022. Visiting hours are 9:30-10:30 with funeral services directly after. Then she will be laid to rest next to her husband in Oakdale Cemetery on Maple Street, Middleton, MA.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chelsea Soldiers home, Quigley Recreation Department, 91 Crest Ave, Chelsea, MA 02150.
