Claudette Sawtelle Obituary

Claudette M. Sawtelle, known to many as Dee, was born on May 11, 1935, in Waterville, Maine, and passed away with her family by her side on July 3, 2026, in Danvers, Massachusetts, leaving behind a life of steadfast love, grace, and quiet devotion.

Dee was the beloved wife of Kenneth E. Sawtelle, and together they shared a union of enduring affection and loyal companionship. She was a devoted mother to Stuart, Alan and his wife Terry, Scott and his wife Kristin, Chris and his wife Colleen, and Jeff and his wife Dianne. She was also a cherished grandmother to Emily and Sophia. Her family was the heart of her world.

She was the daughter of Albert Babbie and Isabelle Brooks Babbie, and she was preceded in death by her sister Barbara and her brother Al. Though loss touched her life, she carried herself with dignity and fortitude, holding fast to the bonds of family and memory.

Before marriage, Dee worked as a bookkeeper, a calling well suited to her careful mind and dependable nature. Her talents were not confined to work, she also gave charitably of her time and spirit in service to others. She volunteered at the Chevrus School for many years. Dee and her friend Theresa were Den Mothers for Malden Troop 603 during their time as troop leaders they were the only female troop leaders in Malden. They helped guide young lives with patience, encouragement, and a motherly hand.

When her children were young, she baked and decorated intricate cakes, with care and pride, each one a work of art.

In her not so quieter years as you can imagine being the mother of 5 sons she could be heard saying "son of a beechnut gum"

In her quieter times she was an avid reader, and books were faithful companions to her.  She painted ceramics with a creative eye, traveled with curiosity and delight, and enjoyed music.

Her life was one of quiet grace, not seeking applause, yet earning admiration.  Dee had a good sense of humor. Her daily devotion to her children, her strength of a mother, sister, aunt, friend and Nanny, the loyalty of a wife, the generosity of a volunteer will be remembered fondly.

She will remain in the hearts of those she loved and those who loved her in return.

The family would like to thank the Kaplan Family Hospice House for their amazing care and support.

In lieu of flowers, Dee would appreciate a donation be made to the Malden Public Library. In the memo please add In memory of Dee Sawtelle – please send to Malden Public Library, 36 Salem St., Malden, MA 02148. Att: Dora St. Martin
