Carolyn Ashley (Chase) Purcell, known affectionately as Carolyn by her friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2024, in Danvers, Massachusetts. Born on October 30, 1935, in Providence, Rhode Island, to her late parents Evelynn (Bastow) Chase and Charles W. Chase, Carolyn's life was one marked by dedication, love, and the pursuit of knowledge.
In her early years, Carolyn attended Saylesville Grammar School, fostering a love for learning that would last a lifetime. Her educational journey continued at the Lincoln School for Girls, where she laid the foundations for her future. Carolyn's commitment to education led her to Lasell Junior College, where she graduated with an associate degree in early childhood. Her passion for teaching young minds propelled her to further her education at Tufts University, where she earned her bachelor’s in education. This degree became the cornerstone of her career as she shaped the lives of countless first graders in Plainville, Massachusetts, with patience and a kind heart.
Carolyn's personal life was filled with love and adventure when she announced her engagement to the late Richard Carson Purcell in 1959. Their union was blessed with a son, Brad Purcell, born on November 1, 1962, who sadly preceded her in death. Richard's work took Carolyn and her family on international excursions to Greece and Sweden, adding a wealth of experience and memories to her life. In 1975, Carolyn and her son returned to the United States, making their home in Danvers, Massachusetts, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Carolyn's life was enriched by her interests and the simple pleasures she cherished. Summers spent in Cape Cod with her family were among her most treasured times, as the beach provided a serene backdrop for her avid reading. These moments by the sea, with a book in hand, were the embodiment of Carolyn's joy and tranquility.
Carolyn's journey through life was one of grace and resilience. Even as her health declined, she faced her challenges with courage and dignity, leaving a lasting impression on her caregivers and loved ones. The memories of her strength and kindness will remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Carolyn was a strong-willed mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Carolyn is predeceased by her sister, Nancy Ferguson, and beloved son Brad Purcell. She’s survived by her grandchildren, whom she called “her greatest gifts”, Zachary and Taylor Purcell. Carolyn also leaves behind nieces and a nephew, Susan Ziegler, David Ferguson and Sarah Holden, and a great grandchild, Presley Chase Purcell. Carolyn was taken care of by Geoffrey Caldarone, Brad’s best friend, whom she loved and often thought of as her own son.
