Barbara Crowley Obituary

Barbara “Barbie” C. Crowley, 95, resident of Brooksby Village, Peabody, MA and formerly of Hobe Sound, FL and Andover, MA passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024.  Barbara was born in Boston on September 5, 1928 to Beatrice and Clarence Colby.  Known as Barbie, she grew up in Newton, MA with her four sisters, the Colby girls.  She attended Newton schools and continued her education at Chamberlain Retailing School in Boston.

As a teenager, she enjoyed sailing on Lewis Bay, off West Yarmouth on Cape Cod.  It was on the Cape where she met the dashing Harold Crowley and had 48 years of marriage before his passing in 1997.  They raised their family in Barrington, RI and Andover, MA.  They enjoyed bowling, tennis, and boating.

Besides having a smashing tennis backhand, Barbara was a talented seamstress.  She knew everything about fabric, having worked at R.H. Stearns, and could easily make anything with a sewing machine.  She designed her own clothes and sewed outfits for her granddaughters.  She had impeccable style.

Barbara and Hal retired to Hobe Sound, FL where they enjoyed many years of golf and tennis.  After Hal’s passing, Barbara enjoyed a wonderful companionship with John Kowalik until his passing.

In 2004 Barbara moved back to New England and settled at Brooksby Village in Peabody where she enjoyed the company of many good friends.  She involved herself in Brooksby’s Meet and Greet New Residents Program and read to Continuing Care residents.  Her days were filled with bridge games, bocce, ping pong, reading and at the end of the day dressing up and leaving the kitchen behind to join her friends in the dining room.  There she met David Demeter, a wonderful companion whom she spent 8 years with.  Barbara relished the times she would get together with David’s family.

Barbara will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lynne Doxsey and her husband Steve; Marcia Haskell and her husband Bill all of Andover, MA and her granddaughter Lauren Doxsey of Melrose, MA, and her many devoted nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by granddaughter Ally Doxsey and sisters Bee Wilson, Libby Snyder, Janet Drury, and Connie Shelton.

A special thanks to Stephany for her dedicated caregiving support. Also, thank you to Care Dimensions Hospice and the aides at Continuing Care who took such good care of our mother.
